Quickish Turns One

Let me follow my own ethos and be brief: Quickish launched a year ago today.

The most important message is this: Thanks to everyone who has given Quickish their time and attention; everyone who tells their friends and colleagues about us (whether through Twitter or, y’know, just talking); and everyone who creates great things worth tipping.

The mission of this company is to help you keep up quickly with the biggest topics. For us, “keep up quickly” means editor-vetted recommendations (“tips”) in a thoughtfully designed and easy-to-consume form, delivered in real-time(-ish). It's hard to believe that at one point in the planning process, I thought we could (or would want to) publish a couple hundred tips per day. The reality is that in a world where filter failure is epidemic, "even less" has become even more.

The ambition hasn't been to displace or replace anything -- it is a supplement, almost like a media multi-vitamin. Hopefully, without asking too much from you, we have been useful and entertaining.

The early reviews from fans and media folks were validating -- as was the audience size. Over the past year, that has grown steadily -- somewhere between “getting somewhere” and “never enough.” Critical reviews continue to be extremely positive. The point is that the product and the ideas behind it have resonated with people. That's a pretty good start.

There were a lot of highlights over the past year -- finding something before anyone else had and passing it along to you was always thrilling. In a media universe where curation increasingly rules, being a trusted source that introduces you to something great is the new scoop. Being valued by people to help make sense of things has always been a core of media, now more than ever.

At some point I will have the time to appropriately reflect on the experience of this first year of being "live" -- I have a lot of strong opinions about the state of the news industry and the state of entrepreneurship (not to mention the ways I have stumbled through the year, hopefully learning a few things along the way). But there are so many things still to do: Looking ahead to 2012, we want to expand into new categories, offer more sports depth, create more original content (in more formats), make new partnerships and just continue to find new ways to help fans keep up.
