All of this gets into the realm of hypotheticals, and that’s sort of the point. We have no clue if New York would be a lottery team sans Anthony, and if you are going to posit they would be, you have to marshal at least some evidence. And the evidence we do have indicates they may well have been a solid no. 7 or no. 8 seed without him.

This, I think, is what makes Carmelo Anthony a unique player -- he honestly couldn't give a shit if you think he's selfish. There's something special about a guy who can tune out boos and newspaper coverage and keep chucking. It's swagger to the point of megalomania.

"Some happy times is ahead of us."
(via NYT's Howard Beck/Twitter) . If the Knicks -- at least in the Carmelo-Amare Era -- will be judged on a curve of being better than the crappy previous years, definitely. If they are judged on NBA rings? Eh.... (More on this next.)

As in most things, we confuse results with decision-making. Before game one, I wrote that I would be screaming “No!†when Anthony jacked up a contested three, and scream again when it went in. Our view of decision-making is colored by our fandom—we can’t stick to our dispassionate analysis of process.

Know that this is as bad as it will get, that this is the start of something, that Carmelo Anthony showed himself to be the sort of talent that is worth trading everything for. The type of talent that, when he's on the floor with Bill Walker and Roger Mason and Jared freaking Jeffries, makes you think you still have a chance.
