Arians and Pagano had an emotional phone conversation after the 20-13 win over the Chiefs. Pagano thanked Arians, twice. Arians told Pagano that he'd been given a job, and he tried to do it to the best of his ability. And Arians said: "Don't you come in too early tomorrow, because I won't be early. He kept a new team with a 70 percent turnover from last year from fracturing, and he did it on his first shot to be an NFL head coach. 'I finally got a chance to be a head coach,' he said, 'and I got the chance while leading a group of men on a special mission for a great man [Pagano] himself. Nothing can compare to this.'"

What else is there in sports, really? These games we play and watch, in the end, may be pointless. A terrible storm like Sandy should remind us of what matters. But the hope that comes with the games, the strength that can be extracted from them, the optimism of sports that might push people to fight just little harder against the end, well, maybe that can matter. It's hard to imagine at the halfway point in this cherished season: The Colts are 5-3 and have a very good chance to make the playoffs. Seriously, make the playoffs. Who saw that coming? Nobody saw that coming. Even the true-blue dreamers lacked the audacity to believe the Colts could be a .500 team or better and make a run at the postseason. There have been a lot of great moments in recent Colts history, and there have been some emotional moments, the most emotional coming in the Arizona game after Tony Dungy returned from his son's funeral. What a storybook win for a Colts team that had little right to dream, trailing by 18 points at the half and looking out-classed by Aaron Rodgers and a Packers offense that seemed to be coming fully to life for the first time all season.
