Today, soccer increasingly relies on size and muscle and speed. The best players must be able to operate in claustrophobic spaces. That is the mesmerizing skill of Messi, slithering through these airless openings in top gear, changing direction, providing as well as scoring, his left foot tapping the ball on each stride with blurred and evasive touches.

What a tough game, in the end. It's hard to say the result didn't suit the match, but I wish it had come about differently.

After two days, I can think of no further way to describe what I was seeing, to draw for you his partnership with the ball, or explain his command of orbital mechanics or Newtonian physics. He is a suspension of cause and effect. He creates his own reality. As all Greats must, he defies science and language and must be seen to be believed.
