Bears DE Julius Peppers was fined $10,000 for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Packers QB Aaron Rodgers in Sunday's NFC Championship game. ESPN's Adam Schefter(via Twitter) Given its impact on the game -- Rodgers was never the same, and it's an open question whether he had concussion-ish issues -- this fine will only encourage more hits like it.
How Cutler and the Bears’ medical team staff handled the situation is consistent with standard protocol, ElAttrache said. Sean Jensen(via Chicago Sun-Times) , talking with an orthopaedic surgeon about the extent of Jay Cutler's injury, going a fair way to separating yakking from reality.
Thanks everyone for the support! It's been a crazy season... Caleb Hanie(via Twitter) , the Bears' 3rd-string QB, who arguably got the biggest lift from the Cutler story.
I don't think they actually believed he wasn't hurt. The vitriol is because people just can't figure him out. Why isn't he squirming? Why isn't he limping? Why isn't he doing what I would do? Nate Jackson(via Slate) , with a worthy last word on Jay Cutler today. (Hopefully last.) Thanks to everyone for sticking with it -- it was basically the only thing folks wanted to talk about today. Much, much more tomorrow.
I'm confused. Some of the same voices urging that the NFL doesn't care about its players' health are now calling out Jay Cutler. ESPN.com's Rob King(via Twitter) , highlighting one of the more questionable leaps of logic in the player(s)-on-player Tweet-down. Be sure to see Slate's Stefan Fatsis on this, a few tips down (or here).
Me personally, I’d have to have been taken off in a cart... I do know I’m not coming out unless I can’t do anything, and maybe that’s how it was [for Cutler]. Philip Rivers(via San Diego Union-Tribune) , who was the biggest insta-comp in the entire Cutler deal yesterday afternoon. (As has been pointed out, Rivers stayed in a game with an ACL tear; he played terribly and his team lost.)
Tony: "To me the most important defense he could have is his teammates." Mike: "It's not a question if he's tough enough. It's a question of whether he's good enough. And that's the issue." PTI(via ESPN) , and -- in a frank assessment -- Kornheiser, in part, blamed "selective camera work" by Fox. Which he is right about, btw.
I can't remember anything quite like Roethlisberger's schoolyard Superman routine—this sense that with the whole game on the line, the more the play breaks down, the more certain his success becomes. Tom Scocca(via Slate) Don't worry -- he leads his analysis of yesterday's games with some discussion of Jay Cutler. But keep going, because his Big Ben stuff at the end is good.
