"This is still a Cruz and (Hakeem) Nicks game. I know we're right on them tight, but those are still the guys. Make them go to Manningham."
(via NFL.com/NFL Films) , in some incredible on-the-field sound from the Super Bowl. (Quote comes at 1:35 mark, but the entire thing is worth watching.)

"One Giant Leap for Manningkind": "If accountability and execution characterized New York's undefeated run from 7--7, those qualities were beacons during the Super Bowl." (Damon Hack)
"This Year's Miracle": "This was the play of the day, a ball that never should have been thrown and probably shouldn't have been caught." (Peter King)
"Oops! I Scored!": "While he couldn't fully enjoy the moment, having given Brady 57 seconds—a millennium—to work with, [Bradshaw's] teammates were not as nervous." (Jim Trotter) Check out more features from this week's SI here.

One way to work this wish, to slow things down, might be to look closely at anybody we see out in the hallway today, or coming past us on the street or in the mall, or sitting up at the counter next to us or over at the next table at lunch, and remind ourselves that what’s pretty likely is that they’re all having exactly these same thoughts and are still trying to see Mario Manningham’s gloved hands pulling in the ball in the midst of a tangle of Patriot paws, and his angling, tangerine-tinged shoes coming down -- one! two! -- somehow inside the white stripe, and his arm cradling the ball and keeping it safe even as he falls.

Sometimes teams just lose. It's not because of a colossal blunder or an abysmal performance or a team "not showing up to play." Sometimes teams don't walk off with the trophy because the other guys are better. This is one of those times.
(via ESPN.com) , addressing a bit of a straw-man argument -- are that many Boston fans (aside from that idiot in MacMullen's alma mater, the Globe) really blaming Brady or Welker or anyone? Still: It was a nagging loose end that needed to be cinched tight by one of the deans of Boston sportswriting.

Worst part of "quarterback wins" -- leads to people wondering if Brady's legacy has been diminished when he played his ass off in that game. Brady made three bad throws -- maybe 2 1/2. grounding call, long pick to Blackburn, & high throw to Welker. Broke SB record for comp. also. But since he didn't "win", he's on the downturn. Please. When a TE is your deep threat and you're forced to throw to Branch over the middle?

Now, from the perch of a victory parade in Lower Manhattan on Tuesday, they can look forward to something nearly as amazing: this is a team primed to be competitive for years, loaded with young talent that was fused by the struggles of this season, with few critical free-agency losses likely to dent the roster.

It was more than fine Sunday night. But someone was missing. Whenever one of the brothers plays in a big game like this, the other one is usually in the locker afterward, lending his support, win or lose. Peyton couldn't do that Sunday night. It was Eli's night.
(via ESPN.com) , on the kind-of-complicated-but-not-really dynamic of Eli winning a Super Bowl in brother Peyton's soon-to-be-erstwhile kingdom.
